RETAIN MY WORDS

Retain My Words
Proverbs 4:4-6 He also taught me, and said to me:
“Let your heart retain my words;
Keep my commands, and live.
5 Get wisdom! Get understanding!
Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Webster’s Dictionary
retain |riˈtān|
verb
continue to have (something); keep possession of
Question: How well do we retain the things we hear?
For me to retain something I need to continue to hear it. The Word of God is our source in life and valuable for us to “retain”. The more we seek it the easier it is for us to store it in our heart.
The scripture says let your “heart” retain my words. This suggests there is a difference in our heart retaining God’s word and our head. I have learned this is very true. The things of God are in our heart by “faith”. We can know something in our “head” but to truly live it and believe in it, it must come from our “heart”.
There are 926 bible verses that reference the “heart”. By this we must conclude that the heart is very valuable to God.
Proverbs 21-2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts.
The heart is what the Lord weighs. It is the center of our life and our place where God exists. Our relationship with Him is built inside of the heart.
Proverbs 6:9 A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.
If we let God into our heart He will direct our steps. We have the choice to put His word inside of us so we can be directed by His plan and not our own.
Father God we seek you by hearing and reading your Word. We retain it in our hearts so that you can direct our path. We trust you with our future and lean not on our own understanding but your wisdom in Jesus name! Amen.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Romans 8:38-39
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
