Power in the Name of Jesus

In the day of Jesus people worshiped so many things including idols and names of different self proclaimed God’s.  Whether we realize it or not we are guilty today of some of the same things and don’t fully understand the consequences of our choices. We worship many things including money, houses, cars and especially success.  None of which will bring us eternal gratification.

Jesus came to bring us a relationship that would give us power from our true heavenly father.  This power would be complete and our source of strength throughout our lives.

Acts 4:13-17 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. ¹⁴ And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. ¹⁵ But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, ¹⁶ saying, “What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.¹⁷ But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”

This passage of scripture shows us that immediately after Jesus had sent the Holy Spirit of God to the people the world began to do everything it could to eliminate the “Name” of Jesus.  The name had given the people “power”.

Mark 16:17-19 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;¹⁸ theywill take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

This power threatened the control of government and people.  It is the ultimate source of strength that comes from God himself and we all have access to the power when we know Jesus as Lord and savior.

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

When we obtain a relationship with Jesus Christ we possess the power of God through His name.  We have the ability to do the will of the father on earth and miracles will be a part of our lives.

The people of the world today are threatened by the name of Jesus the same as the days of the bible.  They are focused on worldly things and are worshiping their idols.  The world and even our nations government is threatened because there is a power that it cannot contain.  This power ultimately will become a reality to everyone when Christ comes again!

Philippians 2:9-12 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, ¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
